Most beginners think a clean tank means hours of scrubbing and draining everything. It doesn't. Emptying the whole tank stresses your fish and wipes out the bacteria that keep the water safe. A short, consistent weekly routine does far more.
Give your tank 15-20 minutes once a week and you'll prevent algae blooms, keep water parameters stable, and avoid that foul tank smell.
The golden rule: never empty 100% of the water.
The beneficial bacteria live on your substrate, decor, and filter media, not floating in the water. Change only 20-30% per session. That clears out nitrates and waste without shocking your fish.
Your weekly routine:
1. Unplug the heater and filter (1 minute). This prevents dry running, burnt-out impellers, and cracked heater glass once the water level drops.
2. Wipe the glass (3 minutes). Use a magnetic cleaner or algae scraper on the front and sides. Keep gravel away from the scraper, since trapped grains can scratch the glass.
3. Siphon the substrate and drain 20-25% (7 minutes). Push the siphon into the gravel to lift waste and leftover food. The heavy stones stay behind. Stop when the bucket holds about a quarter of the tank volume.
4. Rinse filter media only when needed (every 2-3 weeks). If the flow feels weak, swish the sponge or media in the dirty tank water you just removed. Never use straight tap water, which kills the bacteria colony.
5. Refill with treated water (5 minutes). Match the temperature as closely as you can. Add a water conditioner to neutralize chlorine and chloramine, then pour in slowly.
6. Plug everything back in (2 minutes). Restart the filter and heater. A dose of bacteria starter after a filter rinse or heavy clean-out is optional but helpful.
Weekly checklist

| Algae scraping | Weekly | Magnetic glass cleaner |
| Gravel siphoning | Weekly | Siphon hose & gravel vacuum |
| Chlorine neutralizer | Every water change | Water conditioner |
| Filter flow check | Every 2-4 weeks | Filter pads & media |
