Etroplus: from the Ancient Greek (etron), meaning belly, lower abdomen (hoplon), meaning weapon, armor, in reference to the prominent spinous anal-fin rays in members of the genus.

maculatus: from the Latin maculatus, meaning spotted

Description of the area surrounding the biotope: In the former its range stretches southwards down the western coast from the state of Maharashtra through Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala states as far as the southern part of the peninsula in Tamil Nadu state. Records from Sri Lanka are mostly limited to the western coast and pertain to North, North Western, North Central, and Western provinces. The type locality is Coromandel, India the Coromandel Coast is the entire southeastern coast of the Indian Subcontinent between False Divi Point, Andhra Pradesh state, and Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu state.
